Music-Industry Degrees Given In Small Central N.Y. Town

When one thinks of earning a bachelor's degree in the music business, one normally thinks of New York, Los Angeles or Nashville. But thanks to professional cellist Janet Nepkie, the State University of New York College at Oneonta has become another destination for those seeking to learn about the industry. Nepkie, who holds a Ph.D. and also serves as a SUNY Oneonta professor, oversees a program that attracts upward of 600 undergraduates to this small town near Cooperstown, NY each year. Nepkie started the program because found she knew everything about her instrument except how to make a living playing it. Now, she places most of her students in entertainment-business internships across the globe, and many land slots with record companies, artist-management agencies, radio stations, music-publishing companies, performance venues and publicity and entertainment law firms.
