In a bombshell announcement made live on the air at 8:30am ET today, WXRK/New York-based syndicated morning host Howard Stern revealed that he has signed a five-year contract with Sirius Satellite Radio and will join the company in January 2006, after the expiration of his contract with Infinity parent Viacom. Stern has 15 months remaining on his contract with Infinity, and Stern took time out to thank his sponsors for their support over the years. "This is not farewell," Stern said, repeatedly noting that he has been "stifled" for 10 years by the FCC and the federal government over censorship and indecency concerns. Word of his decision was not made in advance to Viacom or Infinity management. "I have a contract here and I will honor it," Stern said. "I couldn't breathe a word of this to anybody because of lots of reasons, some having to do with stock. I thought long and hard about what I want to do. I want to finish my contract here, but this is a done deal. There is no looking back. I have signed a deal and I am going to satellite radio. I am going to devote my life to satellite radio and to Sirius."
