Miramax Films is cutting 55 jobs, or about 13 percent of its staff from across all its divisions, marking the second round of layoffs in a month, a company spokesman said on Thursday.
The cost cutting move comes as Miramax co-chiefs, brothers Bob and Harvey Weinstein, grapple with parent The Walt Disney Co. over contract renewals. While speculation had swirled in Hollywood and New York that Harvey Weinstein would depart, a spokesman for the studio said the brothers were looking to clinch a deal that would have them stay.
"Bob and Harvey are looking for an amicable resolution that will keep them together at Disney," said Miramax spokesman Matthew Hiltzik. He declined further comments on the contract talks.
In August, Miramax had said it was trimming 65 jobs, in a broad-based action that reduced staff to 420. Thursday's move would put the company's employee count at roughly 365.
The job cuts come as Miramax readies itself for Oscar season in Hollywood where it has high hopes for movies that include "Aviator" and "Finding Neverland."
