Google has announced that is has signed on MySpace to participate in OpenSocial, its new coalition aimed at creating a standardized means for developers to create applications that will work across multiple social networks – and also aimed at countering the growth of Facebook’s own open development platform.

MySpace is the biggest social networking in the U.S., and thus its decision to align itself with Google has the potential to propel the growth of the OpenSocial initiative. To date, Google had received commitments from smaller social networks such as Friendster, hi5, Hyves, imeem, LinkedIn.

The plan for OpenSocial is to allow any Web developer to create an application that would work on virtually any social network – rather than having to create dozens of versions. “Our partnership with Google allows developers to gain massive distribution without unnecessary specialized development for every platform,” said Chris DeWolfe, CEO and co-founder of MySpace. “This is about helping the start-up spend more time building a great product rather than rebuilding it for every social network.”

Such mini-Web applications have taken off on Facebook, where users have adopted programs that let them compare music tastes, log how many cities they have visited, or give each other virtual gifts. Several applications have begun to demonstrate commercial or advertising potential.
