Children in a summer fashion program will present a program today showcasing what they learned.
    Miami Herald Staff Report
Members of the Foundation Of Community Assistance & Leadership's second annual Fashion 101 & Teen Runway Showcase summer program will stage their own fashion and entertainment show, Shine, today at the FOCAL-Moore Park Learning Center in Allapattah.

Fashion 101 & Teen Runway Showcase is a program created by the Sports, Film & Entertainment Committee and is designed to give Miami youth a chance to explore career opportunities and gain vocational skills through a behind-the-scenes look at the fashion, beauty and entertainment industries.

This summer, each student in the program took part in designing and creating unique pieces of clothing , helped to come up with a concept for a fashion show and has been planning the show to highlight what was learned.

Students coordinated a model casting call, selected vendors such as hairstylists, make-up artists and photographers and assisted with the production of sound, lights, staging and choreography.

The students also produced a media and marketing campaign for the event, inviting their family, friends and the public to come to the Shine Entertainment Showcase and Graduation.

The program is coordinated by the Sports, Film & Entertainment Committee in conjunction with the Foundation of Community Assistance & Leadership and the city of Miami Parks & Recreation Department.

''The goal of this program is to empower youth to become leaders by challenging their creativity, to equip them with practical, hands-on fashion and entertainment industry marketable skills,'' Ernest Burkeen, director of the Miami Parks & Recreation Department, said in a statement announcing the show.

Marie Louissaint, president of SFEC, entrepreneur and former professional model and actress, said her organization was excited at the opportunity to take the program ``to the next level.''

The Fashion 101 team comprises experts in the fashion and entertainment industry, including Vongie Birch, kids' clothing designer, instructor and actress; Robin Starks, president of S & S Productions, designer and producer of Duane Starks Celebrity Charity events; Iyana Lunan, model, dancer and choreographer; Maurice Andrew, model and actor.

Also on the roster are Charlene Meriedy, president of Fashion Show Innovations and fashion show producer for Absolut Spirits. Elayna Fenelon, Fashion 101 FOCAL student, said in the statement she is proud to have her designs on the same runway with clothing stores and designers: Urban Avenue Clothing Store, Zobi Designs, S&S Productions and Caroline Designs.

The students will model casual wear, back-to-school wear and dazzling wear, to a music-and-dance production to enhance the experience of a fashion show.

FOCAL is a nonprofit after-school and summer program that offers reading, computer technology and science classes. It is a collaborative effort with the Miami Parks and Recreation Department and partners with the National Aeronautics & Space Administration, The Children's Trust, Miami-Dade County, the National Council of Negro Women, Comcast, First Serve and the Sports, Film & Entertainment Committee (SFEC).

''Our goal is to inspire youth to reach for the stars and to strive for excellence as a way of life,'' said FOCAL Program Director Barbara Hardemon. ``We work toward achieving these goals by introducing students to educational activities that help to prepare them for the highly skilled opportunities of the 21st century and fun experiences that could literally change their lives.''
