Youth from FOCAL Fashion 101 & Teen Runway Showcase summer program will produce their own fashion show entitled “Summer Bling”.
Miami, FL – July 24, 2005. Youth from Foundation Of Community Assistance & Leadership (FOCAL), Fashion 101 & Teen Runway Showcase summer program will produce their own fashion show entitled “Summer Bling” on Wednesday, July 27, 2005 at 4:00 pm at FOCAL-Moore Park Learning Center located at 765 NW 36th Street.
Fashion 101 & Teen Runway Showcase is an innovative program created by the Sports, Film & Entertainment Committee (SFEC), designed to allow City of Miami youth the chance to explore career opportunities and gain vocational skills through a behind the scenes look at the fashion and beauty industry. This summer, FOCAL students learned the history of fashion, developed a fashion show concept and are now organizing a fashion show entitled “Summer Bling” to highlight what they have learned. This educational program included: coordination of a model casting call, selection process for vendors such as hairstylists, make-up artists, photographers as well as assisting with the production of sound, lights, staging and choreography of the fashion show. In addition, the students produced a media and marketing blitz for the event inviting their family, friends and the public to attend the “Summer Bling” Fashion Show and Graduation on July 27, 2005.
The project is coordinated by the Sports, Film & Entertainment Committee in conjunction with the Foundation of Community Assistance & Leadership and the City of Miami Parks & Recreation Department. “The goal of this program is to empower youth to become leaders by challenging their creativity, to equip them with practical, hands-on fashion and entertainment industry marketable skills”, says Ernest Burkeen, Director of the City of Miami Parks & Recreation Department.
“We are excited about the opportunity to develop and present this program”, says Marie Louissaint, President of SFEC, entrepreneur and former professional model and actress. The Fashion 101 team consists of various experts in the fashion and entertainment industry including: Kalyn James, accomplished Model / Dancer / Choreographer, former Miss Alabama and Miss America Pageant Finalist; Charlene Meriedy, President of Fashion Show Innovations and Producer for Absolut Spirits, Federated Stores and Clear Channel Entertainment; Phil Fisher, President of On Line Productions, Producer of such notable events such as Taste of Chicago, HBO/Sinbad’s Soul Music Festivals, MLK Reclaim The Dream Candlelight Memorial Service, Allstate Awards; and special guest speakers from the fashion and modeling industry.
Taneilia Jackson, Fashion 101 FOCAL student, who was chosen by her peers to be a Fashion Stylist and Model, assisted in selecting clothes for the “Summer Bling” Fashion Show from the following designer partners: JC Penney, Rochate, Mlle. Louissaint Design Studio, Hiho Batik, Hobe and Daed Jewels. Students from Fashion 101 will feature casual cool wear, sportswear, back to school wear, dress to impress wear and more. Although Taneilia had an accident requiring nine stitches just days before the fashion show, she told her mom and doctor, “I have to get better because I wouldn’t miss our fashion show for anything in the world”.
Fashion 101 & Teen Runway Showcase is hosted by FOCAL, a non-profit 501(c) 3, after school and summer program that offers reading, computer technology and science classes. “Our goal is to inspire youth to “reach for the stars” and to strive for excellence as a way of life. We work towards achieving these goals by introducing students to educational activities that help to prepare them for the highly skilled opportunities of the 21st century and fun experiences that could literally change their lives”, says Barbara Hardemon, FOCAL Program D
