URBAN AMERICA NEWSPAPER
“Developing Community Awareness Through the Expression of Urban Culture”
Urban America Newspaper is a free community-based publication that was founded in 2000 by a group of minority college students and professionals in order to educate, promote, and develop community awareness through the expression of urban culture. Urban culture encompasses all aspects of the urban community (within the different genres that gave birth to the Hip-Hop, Roots, Spoken Word and Modern Jazz scenes). We present news that strongly affects the urban community in the form of entertainment, business, technology, music, sports, fashion and the arts along with the social, political, health, and financial issues that affect it. Our target demographic base is primarily minorities who are between the ages of 15-35.
Urban culture is a movement that has been sustained in this world for centuries and is considered to be the most influential culture in today’s way of life. Urban culture is not limited to what is termed as being “Hip-Hop.” Hip-Hop, itself, is a subculture that first developed in the mid-70s which is was an offshoot of other urban movements that were taking place at the same time (namely, the Funk, Reggae and Punk scenes). We at Urban America Newspaper embrace the urban movement and use it as a vehicle to bring members of our community together as one. Our goal is to be a leader in urban development through increased education and awareness while supporting local businesses, schools, music, and community-based organizations to better our communities.
With over 50,000 readers, Urban America Newspaper has demonstrated continued growth since its conception. In 2004, Urban America Newspaper was voted “Best Local Urban Zine” by the Miami New Times. Our circulation encompasses the South Florida region through local businesses, schools, colleges, as well as special events and venues. We look forward to partnering with our community to strive towards urban excellence.
